Customs in the UAE
The United Arab Emirates has over the last few decades become one of the most important logistics hubs in the world. In addition to rapidly growing imports for local consumption and exports of UAE-made products, re-exports of goods to other countries in the wider region also play a very significant role. This position as a major logistics hub is also partly due to the favourable customs legislation and practices in the UAE.
The Enabling Trade Index, published in 2009 by the World Trade Organization (WTO), confirmed the UAE’s position as a global trade hub and one of the world’s preferred re-export destinations, leading the entire region at 18th position (worldwide) and ranking well in almost all commercial and infrastructure related variables.
The UAE demonstrated clear leadership, as compared to the rest of the world, in several categories including:
- Quality of air transport infrastructure: #4
- Cost to import: rank #5
- Cost to export: rank #6
- Quality of port infrastructure: rank #8
- Timeliness of shipments in reaching destination: rank #17
