Awafi Festival Sets off Celebrations in RAK
Ras Al Khaimah’s most anticipated event, the 12th Awafi Annual Festival, was launched recently in the emirate. Sheikh Mohammad Bin Kayed Al Qasimi, Chairman, Economic Department of Ras Al Khaimah, opened the event on 19 December 2014. It was scheduled to continue until 9 January 2015.
The launch event took place in two separate locations – the Heritage Village and the Roman Theatre – among large audiences. It included participants from the community of Ras Al Khaimah, highlighting the history of the emirate and sharing its rich culture with the younger generation as well as with expatriates who call RAK home.
The programme started with the UAE National anthem and a recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by an operetta titled “Zayed’s Wisdom,” directed by Khaled Al Bannay, an Emirati theatre director and actor. The operetta was performed by a number of female police officers from the Police General Headquarters in Ras Al Khaimah, a group of students from various schools and a group of participants from Ras Al Khaimah Educational Zone. A number of volunteers also participated.
Also at the event was Ahmad Obaid Al Tenaiji, General Manager of the Economic Department of Ras Al Khaimah, who was responsible for managing the festival. Among the officials in attendance were Khalaf Salem Ambar, Director General of Emirates Society for Social Development, as well as a number of Emirati and GCC actors, artists and media representatives.
The Awafi Festival is an event that is worth seeing and attending. This season’s festival promises many exciting activities for visitors to enjoy, such as the dune car races, theatrical performances, cultural shows, a heritage village showcasing Arabic cuisine and other traditional and modern items, as well as contests and much more.
